Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Corruption remains a major challenge in many parts of Nigeria, impacting governance, public services, and economic development. In Bauchi North Local Government Area, citizens and officials alike have witnessed the detrimental effects of corrupt practices, which hinder progress and undermine trust in government institutions. Digital media has emerged as a powerful tool in the fight against corruption, offering platforms for transparency, citizen reporting, and anti-corruption campaigns. Social media networks, websites, and online forums allow individuals to share information, expose corrupt activities, and mobilize public opinion against misconduct. This study explores the role of digital media in combating corruption in Bauchi North, examining how citizens, journalists, and activists use digital platforms to promote accountability and transparency in local governance.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of digital media to combat corruption, there is limited research on its application in specific regions like Bauchi North. While digital platforms have facilitated the spread of anti-corruption messages, the effectiveness of these tools in influencing public perception, mobilizing action, and holding public officials accountable has not been adequately studied. Additionally, challenges such as internet access, digital literacy, and governmental resistance to online reporting need to be addressed to optimize the impact of digital media in anti-corruption efforts. This study will investigate the ways in which digital media is used to expose and combat corruption, and the barriers that hinder its effectiveness.
